Our Spring Conference was held on Saturday, April 5th, in Carteret, NJ. Heidi Butkus gave a wonderful presentation on how to incorporate music in every part of our kindergarten classrooms. This is not an add on, but a “best practice” that energizes the young child and the teachers who work with them. Heidi tied her methods to the latest in brain research and we all had fun doing it. As educators we all know the importance of reaching all our children and Heidi’s mantra of “See it, Say it, Hear it, Do it” resonated with us. Seeing clips of real kindergartners singing, moving, and repeating the music infected us with the joy we witnessed. We Jersey girls made new friends, too, as four teachers who use Heidi in the class drove down to spend the day with us. What a testimony to Heidi’s methods. Thank you to one of our own, Patty Sedran, who lobbied to bring Heidi to our state. We are all richer for it.

Monica Wellington January 16, 2014 Monica opened a window for us to see a little into her world, and what it takes to be an illustrator. She had us laughing and questioning as she shared stories about her early life, and how she came to be an illustrator. It was fascinating to see her work from start to finish as we had no idea how much work, and time, is involved to make a book! We also enjoyed a delicious 4 course Italian dinner at Serata's in Metuchan.
"What's in a Scribble?" The Brain - Body Connection October 22, 2013 Carolyn Finch gave us an informative morning in the gorgeous Liberty Science Center tower about how scribbling is the basis of an individual's body language, moves and gestures, self esteem and decision making abilities."
Peggy Campbell Rush gave us lots to think about and many ideas to use in the classroom. She practiced what she preached about brain breaks and attention by getting us up and moving just as we tired. (The conference was on Saturday morning, after all.)
The place was packed, the speaker good and the company always a treat. In today’s environment, teaching is not an easy job and being an advocate for children is even harder. We need each other. A big thank you to all who came!
Performer's Showcase September 29, 2013 8 fantastic educational, affordable presentations were made by performers that can come to your school. There were music, puppets, authors, animals experts and scientists.

Thank you to our speaker, Mary Ann De Sapio for an informative and interesting workshop: "Girls and Boys: Different Learners and What Teachers Need To Do In The Classroom" and "Child At Play: Don't Leave School Without It". Mary Ann gave us much to think about on these most important topics and shared wonderful activities that she uses in her classroom. We were also surprised by a visit from Audrey Penn (author of The Kissing Hand and so many other stories). Audrey shared her most recent manuscript as well as her new board book with us.
Ocean County Fall Workshop on September 17, 2011.
In September, The Ocean County Chapter held a wonderful workshop featuring Daryl Cobb, well known author, musician and performer! Mr.Cobb focused on imagination and life experience to help stimulate kindergartner literacy skills. The highlight of the event featured Mr. Cobb singing and performing for us if we were our students. It was a wonderful workshop! Photos from the day can be viewed by clicking here.
